social psych in sports !!

compliance

Compliance is a low level form of conformity where people change the way they act, but not the way they think. For example, when you are watching a football game in a astadium, you may act more excited because those around you are also excited. But when you are watching a football game on your own in your living room, you may not actually be that excited.

obedience

Obedience is listening to someone, usually someone in a position of power, because they ordered you to. During sports games, the athletes exhibit obedience by listening to their coaches, team captain, and referees.

social facilitation

Social facilitation is when the performance of the individual is increased by the presence of others. For example, when running a relay race, the overall time is lower than if any one individual were to run the race by themselves.

group polarization

Group polarization is when members of opposing groups make extreme decisions that may not actually reflect what they feel. For example, members of opposing teams may be harsh and hostile towards each other. They may do or say things to the other group that they otherwise would not have.

reciprocity norms

Reciprocity norms are when people help each other and everyone recieves equal benefits from it. For example, in a sports team, everyone will work together, and, if they win, they all get to celebrate the win equally.
