memory

how good is your memory ?

short term memory test: 8 correct parts
I think this is pretty accurate, because I usually can't remember a random list unless I spend more time trying to actually encode it into my memory.

memory for faces: 8 correct parts
I think this is accurate because I am usually good at recognizing people's faces, even if I don't know them very well.

I did better on this than I expected to - I am usually really bad at remembering a lot of random things.

Researchers have recently discovered that there are 2 types of cells in the brain that help organize discrete memory based on where they occurred. The researchers found that there were two different types of boundaries when forming memories. A "hard boundary" is when there is a sharp cut between certain events. A "soft boundary" is when the line between two different events is kind of blurred and blends into one another. They found that "boundary cells" became active during either hard or soft boundaries while "event cells" became active only in response to hard boundaries. They theorized that a new memory is created when both boundary and event cells are active. This study helps understand how new memories are formed and may have further implications in studying memory disorders.
